[RC] why cougars kill - Dawn Simas

Cougars (all cats actually) do indeed kill even when they are not hungry.  We could call it "sport" or "fun", but more accurately it is "practice".  Practice makes perfect.  And when you have to rely on your skill and are solitary, your survival depends on being good at killing without getting hurt.  Practice, practice, practice, especially if opportunity presents itself...

And Ed is absolutely right, be prepared!  You are in more danger of cats when in dense brush with an escarpement on one side.  They use this sort of topography to sit and wait to pounce on unsuspecting prey that comes down the trail (since deer use the same trails we do).  Regularly look behind you when passing rock outcroppings, they will jump you from behind, and generally will not attack if you see them.  You could always paint eyes/face on the back of your helmet.  :)  Don't laugh, this has reduced the attacks by tigers in India substantially.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to create a fear, just hoping to educate those of you in cougar country.  It's *much* more dangerous driving to the trailhead on our roads.  Drive safe, ride safe.   :)
