Question -- what are the advantages of a combination barn/living quarters, as opposed to building a house, with a separate, detached barn? ( I'm assuming that the living quarters are intended to be the main residence).

I have a friend who has a house/barn combo. Her main advantage is (she's a widow so has no help) that she can feed her horses without having to go outside in whatever weather. Can do it in her bathrobe. However, she does store some hay there.
