For me, it is the idea of (what I, and others, would call) "needless suffering".

As a community, I'd like to think that the Endurance folks pay particular attention to suffering.
Whether it's the horse, the rider, the pristine trails, native flora, bank accounts, the world's supply of neoprene and lycra, the world's supply of beet pulp, the plethora of opinions available on horse lists, and so on.

I think each of us, watch carefully to help ensure that our horses don't suffer their association with us and our sport.  Then, the very components which constitute "suffering" seem to vary from person to person.

If we (the species) truly have "dominion", we have the associated "responsibility" as well.  Then, even that word (responsibility) varies from person to person.
Consensus only happens in countries where the general population ceases thinking, ceases accepting responsibility and buries their collective heads in their laptops.
