Re: [RC] CTR - Barbara McCrary

Emma McCrary, my sister-in-law, will be managing her Swanton NATRC ride this year...the 35th. She has poured her heart and soul into these rides since she first started the Swanton NATRC. She would like everyone to know this will be her last, and best. It will include a 2-day, 50 mile event. The dates are July 14-15. Please contact her at 831-423-4365 for further details.

Barbara

try http://www.natrc.org/faq.html

That site is up, and has a good overview of CTR. I found it yesterday, as I was considering the same thing as you, and have never done CTR before. Short summary of the info on the above site:

Three divisions: Novice and Competitive Pleasure (average speed 3.5 - 5 mph), and Open (4 - 6 mph). Judges rate you on horsemanship, horse manners, horse handling, care of the horse, and other stuff. Judging starts before the ride - got the impression that a judge will come around and see how you camp is set up, etc. Judges are on the course at various points, and you have to negotiate "natural" obstacles that you are then graded on. You can "pass" if you aren't comfortable with what is asked, but you lose points. They have vet checks -- sounds like you are only allowed 4 P&Rs: when you come in (courtesy), 10 minutes later, then 2 more at 10 minute intervals. If you haven't come down to criteria by then, you are disqualified. Meets are usually 2 days (20 - 30 miles each day).

There is more detail in the web site, but that is the gist of it. If you are new, you tell ride management and they will assign you a 'mentor' for the ride to help you out at camp, tell you the rules, etc. The 'mentor' does not have to ride the ride with you, I don't believe, but they might anyway.

Will someone give me some insight on what to expect? I tried a couple of sites one didn't work and the other wasn't helpful. Tried googling and didn't get anything. I think this might get posted twice. Thanks in advance. Shawna
