RE: [RC] [RC] Early morning ride start times - heidiAnd it's not just the challenge of darkness. If it is very cold when the sun comes up it is likely to get very cold when the sun goes down. True, there is not so much chance of "frisky" injuries. Much greater chance of cold, tired riders getting into trouble. Yep, managers have to consider the effects on BOTH ends of the rider spectrum. Nancy Mitts Usually, the first few hours after sundown are nowhere near as bitter as those last minutes before sunup can be. Often the day's low temps are recorded just before sunup. And that said, having been in the dark on both ends of the spectrum, I'll take darkness at the end of a cold 50 ANY day over darkness at the beginning. The horses still out at the end of the day tend not to be the overridden ones anyway--although certainly the riders are tired. But they have an opportunity to "work into it' that they don't have in the mornings. I've seen early mornings in ride camps as low as 10F here in the NW--and it is a very wise thing to wait for a bit of sunshine to start.
