[RC] Thoughts on sugar & molasses - k s swigart

The problems associated with a sugar high from sweet feed comes not so
much from the molasses in it as the grain that you add it to.

Grains have a much higher sugar content (percentage-wise) than most
hays.

However, the percentage of sugar in apples and carrots on a "dry matter
basis" is virtually irrelevant, since none of us is feeding them as dry
matter (i.e. dehydrated). So, while a pound of dehydrated carrots has a
lot of sugar in it, a pound of fresh carrots (which are about 80% water)
has very little. Less, in fact, than a pound of molasses, or even a
pound of some hays.
