Re: [RC] HAY Prices CA. - Rae Callaway

Wow - I'm feeling really fortunate that my hay guy delivers once a month and the price only varies from $4.50 to $5.50 a bale (depending on whether it's coming from the field or barn.)  I had introduced him to my friend, who has a 96 stall public stable a couple of years back - pretty much set his business up for life, so he's never let me drop off his list.  This stable goes through about 1,000 bales a month!! (2 string, approximately 45 - 50 lb bales).

$120 a week? Can you order a flat bed from a grower? or is storage the problem? I have always tried to put up enough hay for a year, not hard with one horse, but now with three, impossible. I have been able to pre-pay this past year, purchased a bale wagon (160 bales) of alfalfa from the farmer and he was kind enough to put a sign on it for me that it was sold. I go and get 10 bales at a time or so. I have done that with the 800 lb grass I just bought. Paid for 7, took 2, he is holding 5. Actually, I mentioned the drought in the south and that I was afraid that a hay broker would buy all they had so I wanted to make sure that I had some on hold. I know that my what I have been able to set up is not the norm. Can't afford a big enough structure to purchase and store 12 ton a year so I am very thankful for the folks that will hold it for me.
