Re: [RC] [RC] Deb Bennett's Article in Jan EN - Juli JakubI come from an eventing background where there are lots of four year olds starting to compete. My Morab is going to be 4 this spring. I have already backed her and done alot of walking, a little trot. turn left, turn right, some basic leg yielding, brakes, and basic forwardness. This summer she will probably learn to canter a little bit. I might take her to some walk/trot schooling shows and spend time taking her out and about on different trails. But I will not really compete her ( be it LD or full dressage or eventing) until five or six depending on what she tells me. But I agree if you have an industry the horses will have to be started earlier. It is hard to make a profit if you have to wait six years to get the horse out to shows to get experience under its belt so you can sell it for a decent amount. It is also hard to make a profit to just wait until 4 or 5 to sell it as a greenbroke. My student just bought a sport morgan for $11,000. She is 5 and walks, trot, canter, collected work, and jumps up to 3 foot or so. It made me feel like I was really behind on Be's training, but then I reminded myself that good things come to those who wait!! Some say I train too fast, some say I am way too slow, but Be thinks I am doing it just about right. I find the horses tell you when you are pushing too much too soon. Be definately has an opinion about how much work she should be doing at this stage!! : )Juli

Juli Jakub

The Air of Heaven is that which blows between a horse's ears.

~ arabian proverb

From: Lynne Glazer <anyone@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
