Re: [RC] [RC] Deb Bennett's Article in Jan EN - Juli Jakub

I come from an eventing background where there are lots of four year olds starting to compete. My Morab is going to be 4 this spring. I have already backed her and done alot of walking, a little trot. turn left, turn right, some basic leg yielding, brakes, and basic forwardness. This summer she will probably learn to canter a little bit. I might take her to some walk/trot schooling shows and spend time taking her out and about on different trails. But I will not really compete her ( be it LD or full dressage or eventing) until five or six depending on what she tells me. But I agree if you have an industry the horses will have to be started earlier. It is hard to make a profit if you have to wait six years to get the horse out to shows to get experience under its belt so you can sell it for a decent amount. It is also hard to make a profit to just wait until 4 or 5 to sell it as a greenbroke. My student just bought a sport morgan for $11,000. She is 5 and walks, trot, canter, collected work, and jumps up to 3 foot or so. It made me feel like I was really behind on Be's training, but then I reminded myself that good things come to those who wait!! Some say I train too fast, some say I am way too slow, but Be thinks I am doing it just about right. I find the horses tell you when you are pushing too much too soon. Be definately has an opinion about how much work she should be doing at this stage!! : )

Agreed, Kim. I don't start mine at rides till 6, but I don't have a lot of horses, and might not do LDs with new ones in the future. And they don't "have" to earn their keep, except to be pleasant companions. My 2 adults did not finish growing (taller) until 8, and the Lipizzans definitely don't stop till then, so the young'un cross (pictured in the EN article) will definitely be late to competition. She gets lots of cross-training like free-schooling and ponying, playing with tiny jumps and cavaletti--no work on a circle, but once we have a 60' round pen I will free-school in that.

The 7 rides I managed, there were not many LD 4 year olds, most were 5 and older, with a lot from 6-9, as I scan the database. That article was wonderful reading in its entirety. I think it was http:// www.womenandhorses.com, the current newsletter.

I have a horse that is coming six and this will be her first year of competition. I bought her as a 4 y.o. and didn't start riding her until she was 5. Are there really alot of people that compete with 4 y.o.?

I will explore this further but it really has me thinking that perhaps it is not in the best interest of my horse's to be riding them in LDs as 4 years olds
