While mountain lions will attack horses, I would believe that your bigger
danger would be from your horse dumping you if the lion gave chase.  I
would carry a gun if I were riding in lion country, but since you are not
comfortable with that and since I really don't want to start another
thread on gun use on ridecamp, pepper spray is better than nothing.  A
stick across their nose "can" be effective, too, if you are lucky.  Most
folks killed by lions never saw them and were hit from behind.  Glad I
live in a civilized place that still has a hunting season on lions so they
have a little fear of people :)   Cindy
