There's even more to it than the "want to finish" trap that may 
affect the best of intentions.

I discovered that I couldn't force my way through some physical 
limitations I had, no matter how much will power I applied.  My own 
suffering overruled my ability to be responsive and caring for my 
horse.  Thank goodness my horses were always well conditioned and 
trail wise - I had done my homework! - and were able to carry on with 
a dead weight on their backs.  Until I I learned to take care of my 
own health and condition, I was a liability to my partnerships with 
my horses.  I finally learned I had to think of myself first, and 
then on the ride I was able to be a better partner with my horse.
