Hi,
I'm not a vet but I do own a breeding operation.  Sewing up a mare will just cause extreme pain, because the stallion is just going to try to do it anyway until he succeeds.  It might get your mare hurt, because if the stallion is unsuccessful, he may savage the mare.
 
If, by remote chance the stallion gets out and breeds a mare (never happened here) you can always give your mare a prostin (lutylase) shot to abort her.
