Re: [RC] Trailer loading - Stacy Sadar

Kat,

Agree with you on this.  If you lead them in then when you "back out" they tend to follow.  My youngest horse prefers to lead himself into the trailer.  Maybe he doesn't like the two of us together in such close quarters as much as I don't like it!  I really hate being in the trailer with a horse...too scary for me, especially a straight load (escape door or not)!  I'd rather let them go in by themselves.
I have a slant load and it's definitely not totally impossible to send a horse into a slant load without you leading them in.  Both of mine will do it, but they also know "WAIT" and won't move until I tell them too.  And that includes getting out of the trailer.

If you ask me, part of your problem is that you are leading her in. I
don't lead horses into trailers, I send them in. If you do that, when

her, and it will be easier to correct it.

What I avoid like the plague (although I cannot say I NEVER do it) is
getting into trailers with horses. In my opinion, a horse is not fully
trailer trained until you can throw the lead rope over the horse's
withers, point it at the trailer, and say "load up" and it leaps onto
the trailer. Since you have a two-horse straight load, this should be
easy (it is a little trickier but not impossible with a slant loader,
which is why _I_ don't and wouldn't choose to own one).
