I remember hearing that...but what do I look for that can judge whether or not it can stop the trailer?

The truck will have two numbers, a GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) and the amount of trailer weight it can handle. Find out the empty weight of any trailer you are considering, add the weight of the horses, water in tanks, and all of your gear, then 10% for good measure and be sure it is within the rating. Then keep both the trailer and truck brakes well-maintained (and tires, including air pressure, as well).
