[RC] [RC] Horse size....what gives?!?! - Daniela Desilets

Hi,

I am not so confounded by the trend to bigger horses, not that I agree with it! People nowadays want bigger everything - houses, cars, etc.. Add to that the fact that more people are overweight right now than ever (no offense meant to anyone who is heavier) and wanting bigger horses is just part of the same overall trend. As a society we really believe that bigger is better.

When my parents finally brought my neice for a horsie ride on my horse, my father was absolutely shocked to see how short my horse is. He's a 14.2 QH, just turned 3 at the time, and is just barely under 1000 lbs (still has to fill out but not likely to get more than an inch taller, he's coming 4 now). In fact my father was adamant that I had bought a pony and that there was no way my horse could be a purebred QH. I had to offer to bring the papers over to convince him that yes, he was a horse and not a pony. I am 5'4", and weigh about 125 - even with the western saddle I am not more than 150 pounds on his back. I have long legs, and they don't extend past his girth at all, he's very deep chested (contributes to that pony look, haha). He is more than enough horse for me.

In contrast, I see young ladies as much as a foot shorter than me, refusing to consider any horse under 15 hands. I was purposefully wanting a horse between 14 and 15 hands, definitely I wanted less than 15 hands. There is still a market for shorter horses, but it is admittedly limited. Oh well, more for US to choose from!
