RE: [RC] Bank Of America Post -VERY BAD - David LeBlanc

A couple more things -

Everyone on Windows should upgrade to IE 7. It's free, a lot more secure,
and has anti-phishing stuff built in. If you're running some other Web
browser, it probably has some other way to do it, and please keep it up to
date since all the browsers (on all operating systems) have had lots of
security problems. If you're security minded, and have the chance, upgrade
to Vista as soon as you can - there's some serious improvements. It's also
just cool - really nice UI.

Lynne's right - these aren't viruses. It's far worse - a live hacker trying
to get your bank information.

If you're using the full Office Outlook (not Outlook Express), then it is a
good thing to set up your mail so that only people on your contacts list and
approved senders go into your inbox. Everything else goes in your junk mail.
This keeps images from coming up, so the spammers don't know if you got it.
Any links to web sites don't show up as links, and if you want to go to the
page, you have to copy and paste (or put the mail in your inbox). Better
yet, it shows you where the link really goes to. I can post exact directions
if people are interested. If you're on some web-based e-mail, I'm not sure
what helps, though they usually have reasonable anti-spam built in.

If you're running a Mac, you still need to pay attention - there's a lot of
underground, not publicly known attacks and attackers using them. You should
still keep things up to date, use firewalls, and so on. And phishing is
completely independent of anything else you do - all it needs is gullible
people who make mistakes.

Here's another good tip - I've noticed that Ebay and Paypal both spam you
with lots of mail. Go to one of the web-based e-mail systems (Hotmail,
Yahoo, gmail, etc), and set up an account just for that. That way, if you
get Ebay or Paypal mail coming to your main account, you know it's phishing.

BTW, while the list below is good, don't consider a NAT (network address
translation) to be a security measure. Any of these that you're likely to
buy for less than $1000 are what's called a 'cone NAT', and is very easy to
get around. A serious stateful proxy firewall isn't so easy to get around,
though these aren't perfect either.

D'Arcy:

This is NOT A VIRUS. It's phishing, trying to find live
recipients and personal info that can later be exploited.
See wikipedia.org for a definition. Phishing e-mails aren't
targeting your hard disk as many of the viruses do. PC
people have to be especially vigilant about security--a
firewall, maybe network address translation, anti- malware,
and of course anti-virus software. And the stuff needs to be
updated all the time.

1. Keep your e-mail client set to not automatically "load
images" if an e-mail with images is open. Giving time to
evaluate whether or not it's junk or phishing.
2. Consider running Really Good spam filtering software.
SpamSieve on the Mac side is my current favorite.

I agree with looking at the subject/sender, using discretion
about what one opens and doesn't--just like stuff in the
snail-mail box, some things just need to be junked.

Do not open this email. Just delete it. More than likely
everyone on

Norton SystemWorks on their computer. Someone on RC has a worm /

through to
RC email list.
