Re: [RC] opening gates? - Diane TrefethenHi Carla,Down in San Mateo County coastside we have a lot of those gates. My biggest fear was getting one open and then not being able to close it! At first I really struggled with them (I was then 5'2", 118#), till I learned a trick that employs leverage. I'm sure you know to put the gate post in the bottom loop of barb wire first but after that, don't push that post towards the stationary fence post and try to get the top loop over it. Instead, stand where you can get your whole arm through the fence and around the fence post and the gate post and PULL the gate to the fence with your ARM, not your hands. I quickly found that ANY gate that I could undo I could put back, usually more easily than I got it open :) A side bonus is that this is easy to do without taking off your gloves when it is cold. The gates I encounter are the kind you have to get off the horse to open and close -- they're made out of barb wire and they collapse. And it takes all my strength to open and close (especially close) some of them. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
