If you like lo-tech and inexpensive, a stethoscope will do very well. Besides, they have no leads to break, sensors to move and no false readings. Also, when someone ELSE's monitor goes south, you can whip your stethoscope out and take their pulse for them a lot easier than trying to take THEIR horse's pulse with YOUR heart monitor.

Try any med supply store. Ask your vet if you don't know of any. Also, I think most of the ranch supply catalogs, printed and online, carry them.

Buy a good one, not top-of-the-line good, just well-off-the-bottom good.
