Re: [RC] Pain and stiffness after a 50, a given? - Chelsea Marsh

Even though I've only done trail riding so far, I've found that what
makes you feel better when you're sore is to moan and groan a lot,
hobble around like you're dying, and heave strategic sighs every once in
a while. Yep, it ALWAYS makes me feel better!

Chelsea

P.S-I hope you guys know that I'm just kidding!

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory.
Gin is a muscle relaxant (via the brain).

I pre-load with Aleve (naproxen) before strenuous muscle activity.
A general rule of pharmacodynamics is that it takes 5 dosing intervals to
get good blood levels of a drug. So with Ibuprofen, an every ~6-hr drug,
you
want to start taking it ~ 30 hrs beforehand. (Aleve is an every 8-to-12
hr
drug, but I still only start taking it the day before.)

It's like the old adage about the cure for snake bite, which is whisky.
And the way you use it is to always have it in you when you're bit.

EEK! You guys are scaring me with your tales of pain
and stiffness after a 50. Is it really common?
Seriously, I've got a plan in place to reduce the
day-after 'agony' from my first 50 . I bought a truck
with heated seats after hearing rave reviews (and I
definitely feel pretty great after hours in the truck
with that sucker on so I can see how it will help my
back), and I'll use my Sumerel light therapy unit on
myself as much - ok, maybe more - than I use it on my
horse. I have the one you see advertised a lot in
Endurance News - the ad with the horse with the funny
looking light cap on - it REALLY helps with muscle
tightness and soreness that I get from my chronic bad
back, and last but not least I've finally found
happiness with a saddle that allows me to walk upright
right after dismounting (a Specialized, whereas my
sport saddle created horribly tight hip flexors and
caused me to walk with what appeared to be an
invisible walker for about 5 minutes).

Any other suggestions that don't involve drugs or
alchol? he he he.

Kristi (who has ridden up to 40 miles in a day but has
images of those extra ten as a bit, er, tougher)

Life's a journey, so enjoy the ride (and try not to fall off)
