Re: [RC] First 25 mile ride - Don Huston

Hello Chelsea,
This has always worked well for me. I get up at least 1 hour before the 50's start and feed the horse and tack up but just snug enough to keep the saddle on then let the horse eat and watch the 50's leave for the start. IMHO having the saddle on all this time virtually eliminates the cold back syndrome. As soon as the 50's are gone I mount up and go to the start and ride out a ways and back and try trotting some. Usually if the horse is gonna act up he will do it when I ask to move out so now I have time before the real start to work out the humping and head tossing and get a controlled trot going and then I ask for the trot and then a walk over and over if necessary but I definitely keep walking all around and back to the start and try to time it so I am at the other side of camp when the ride really starts and then just walk right on out past the number takers. During the ride I try to make everything the horse does "my idea". At the start I know the horse is pumped and wants to go so I ask for the trot before we get into a fight about it then pull back to a walk for a minute then trot some more. While trotting, if the trail is wide enough, I change lanes so to speak to let the horse know I'm in control. I wiggle the bit with light pressure to slow the trot and release right away when I get it to say I'm in control. So basically I try to stay one step ahead of what the horse wants and not start any fights but hey it's a horse and $hit happens. Good luck, because it's always nice to have. :-)

What can I do to make sure that I
won't lose control of her in a large group of horses in riders?

Thanks a lot for the help!
