Re: [RC] Coggins.. - Stacy Sadar

earlier Labdoggy gave this address for places to stay with horses while travelling.  www.horsetrip.com
The site lists what each state requires....coggins & health cert. and how long.

I believe in All 50 states - it is ILLEGAL to sell and/or transport a horse on public roads WITHOUT a current Negative Coggins test.

Just because their herd APPEARS EIA-free.. does not mean it is so. EIA can be transmitted by most blood-sucking/biting insects. So if there are other horse farms within a 1/2mile distance - or they trailride with other horses (or show) - or they train outside horses.. their herd can be exposed..

Back in the 70's (before coggins tests were available) my husband's parents owned two horses which ran on their 30 acres. Very few other horses nearby. They owned these horses for over 10 years, and the two horses seemed happy/healthy. Then one got ill spells and lost weight. Turned out both horses had EIA - probably since they'd been purchased. Apparently, they'd been carriers and suffered no ill effects until they became aged and their immune systems were no longer strong...... To this day - my husband won't even CONSIDER allowing any new boarding horses on our property without a 3-4month old Coggins test. Regardless of if they came from a sigle-horse property or a closed herd.. Too risky.
