[RC] Snakes - Karen Everhart

Hi Mike,

Talked to my Vet about this specifically. She said, and we are in rattlesnake and copperhead country, that it is not effective due to the pressure of the swelling against the hose. The swelling will collapse the hose. She said she has NEVER used a hose in a number of years of practice. She said a 20 cc shot of IM Recover was the way to go. If the venom crosses into the brain, it won't matter anyway as the horse will likely seize and die.

I had a dog bitten on the nose by a Timber Rattler about 3 months ago. We rushed her to the Vet. The protocol was antihistamine, IV followed by a week of Antibiotics, to prevent infection at the wound site. Vet said if I had Benedryl, that an adult dose, by mouth, was an appropriate home remedy that was as effective as her IV meds.

So, I now have Benedryl and Recover in my treatment cabinet.
