They've got almost exactly the same completion rate as LDs.
If you ask me, the 'real' endurance riders are the people out there
doing 75's, 100's, and multidays.

Mike Maul posted some results a while back in the EN that
show the pull rate is about the same up through a 75. For a
100 it almost triples.

I took a look at this from my data set, too. It turns out that there are
differences, but they're seasonal. For 50's vs. 25's, the completion rates
aren't significantly different, until you look at it by month. In the hotter
months (July, August), the 50's do have a slightly lower completion rate,
and it is signficant. During the rest of the year, there's no significant
difference. My contention is that if they were all that much harder, there
would be differences in the completion rate.

My message to the new people who've only done LD and are thinking 50's are a
huge challenge is to not be daunted. If your horse is in good condition and
you're in control of your horse, go try a 50. Just take it slow. Biggest
thing to remember is to take care of yourself. You may not need to eat or
drink for a 4 hour ride, but you will for an 8 hour ride. It really isn't
all that hard.

That is pretty much born out by some work I did which has the
pull rate for 50-95 miles (which turns out to by 50-75) has
been running flat at about 13% while the pull rate for the
100 is about 40%. There seems to be a wall somewhere between
75 and 100 miles.

I think you may also find that the 75 and 80 mile rides have significantly
lower completion rates than 50's, but not nearly as striking as the 100's.
