RE: [RC] LD/50 times - heidi

David is right that this sort of scenario can and does happen in real life.

Here is a really extreme example.  I was the head vet at this one, and watched it happen.  At Horse Ridge in 1997, my own husband won (yes WON) the 30-miler with a time of 5:51.  (Keep in mind that you have 7:15 in which to finish 30--there was ample time left on the clock here, even with the time of a hold subtracted.)  This was the horse's first ride, although my husband was fairly experienced.  There were only four riders total on the LD.  The other three rode as a group and finished in 5:55.  This was also their first ride, and they rode together.  My husband's speed on the course was 5.13 mph.

This was a relatively easy course.  The winner of the 50 rode the course in 3:33 for an average speed of 14.08 mph.  The TAIL END of the 50 rode the course in 7:08 for an average speed of 7.01 mph.  There were 28 starters and 27 finishers on the 50.

There was also a 100-miler the same day on the same course.  The winner of the 100 rode the course in 11:12 for an average speed of 8.93 mph.  The TAIL END of the 100 finished in 19:05 for an average speed of 5.24 mph--also just a shade faster than the WINNING speed on the 30-miler.  There were 9 starters and 9 finishers on the 100.

While this example is indeed extreme, it underscores that such results are indeed real and do happen.

This could happen. For example, my wife was in the middle of the top-10 on a
30 this year, and it wasn't because she was going fast, it was because the
really fast people just weren't in the LD on that ride. We could also have a
ride where the hardest loop is only done by the LD riders, or the hardest
loop is only done by the 50's. The expectation is that over 100's of rides,
this will average out. This is why I wanted hundreds of samples.
