RE: [RC] [RC] teaching to tie with belly rope...NOT - Nancy Mitts

I've had the same experience, Kathy. (Worked for a trainer for years, so saw a lot of horses who had gotten off to a bad start.) Used correctly, the belly rope method is a lot LESS likely to let the horse bang it's head. If they can flip over backwards, they had way too much rope. And, as with any good method you don't just let them fight it out alone. We start all of ours that way, just in case they try to pull. Usually only use it once or twice, they back up against it, come forward (get praised) & that's it. We don't even tie them solid at first, but it's set up so we can get enough leverage so they never "break" loose that first time. They just don't seem want to fight like they do tied directly to the head. And, I probably would not use it the first time with a pregnant mare, except in an emergency, just in case something did go wrong.

I've successfully and without any rope burns, scars, or marks on any of
my horses have used the belly rope method on confirmed sit-down,
fall-over, lay there 'til the rope/halter/post breaks pullers. >
