Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] Are the LD's feeding 50's? - Truman Prevatt

Some time back I looked a speeds and sure enough across the board, the top 5 LD's were riding at a slower speed than the top 5 50's. The average speed in LD's were slower than the average in the 50. This was true for every region. The data was for the 2002 season. I did find a few examples (less than a hand full) where there was no times given for the LD so that data was eliminated. There was one case where the LD times were all the same so clearly something wrong there and the data eliminated. These incidents surfaced in the West somewhere if I remember correctly.

I actually ran an analysis of variance to look at regional differences. There was some - but in every region the average ride speed for the LD was less than that for the 50. In every region the speed of the top five LD's was less than that for the top 5 50.

This lives at http://www.seraonline.org/Archives/LDstudy.pdf

I might re-run it for the past three years after the '06 season is over, but I suspect the same trends will surface.

That's not what anyone has said. They said the 50 mile riders went about 15%
faster. So if the 50 was won in 5 hours even, a typical LD the same day
would be won in about 2:50.

I also wouldn't tend to characterize LD riders as conservative, but they do
have slower winning speeds on average than the 50 mile riders. That's part
of the point - I can run up front on a 25, then go out the next week and
ride the same ride at the same speeds in a 50 and end up middle of the pack.
For example, in 2003 I came in 8th at Redwoods in 5:46, and the first place
25 mile rider that day had a ride time of 2:56. The winner of the 50 was
exactly an hour in front of me.
