[RC] hoof angle issues - Eric J Nelson

I have a horse with lower hoof angles than I would like, but I can't seem
to get a good angle without running into other problems. The horse is an
11 year old arab gelding, about 14.2 and 800 lb. Not big feet but
proportional to his size. Fed well, tried biotin for a year w/no change.
Goes barefoot except competition. Footing locally, dirt, mud, grass, sand,
some asphalt. His heels tend to underrun and if allowed to grow(some
farriers wouldn't trim the heel) the heels and bars will fold over the
sole and bruise his feet. The problem is that if his toes are trimmed
enough to bring the angle up, he acts sore like his sole has been trimmed
too thin in the toe area. His angle runs about 47 in front. His toe is
about 3" or a little less. I roll the toe when he is barefoot. I have
trimmed other horses and they have angles of 52-56, so what is up with
this one horse? I am not a farrier, but don't have many options in my
area, so please don't flame me. Also, if anyone has a suggestion on a
good school to take a basic shoeing course, I would greatly appreciate
this, as I want to learn much more.
                                          Thanks - Shelly
