[RC] Soft tissue injury - Spottedracer

When I say 'rest' - it is in a LARGE paddock/flat pasture... and keeping them off pain meds in order for them to self-regulate. (If they're in severe pain/swelling - it's pain meds + stall until the initial pain/swelling are down. Then no meds and 24/7 turnout)

This has even worked with a horse with bog spavin/OCD in his rear hock. Now he's fully sound, happy and used for beginner lessons.... Though we'll never chance recurrance by doing pro-barrel racing on him again.. Too much stress on that hock..

Also worked with a stallion with mild hind bows. Gave him 6 months off (after initial swelling was gone - he was put into 24/7 paddock turnout).. Brought him back into light trail riding/parades.. He has now been fully sound with no apparent scar tissue for 2-3 years. And is being shown in under-saddle events by his current owners..

Most people seem to ASSUME that 'rest' is only in a stall.. Once the vet says their OK for turnout, if they aren't on meds (and by themselves or with a CALM buddy) they will generally 'self regulate' their activity and keep it below the point of discomfort. The other good side to this - is that you can tell the horse is ready to start SLOWLY back into training - when it's running/bucking/playing around the pasture with no signs of discomfort... ....**This is what UT and Nolensville Animal clinic  (the only Nashville clinic that does major surgeries...) both advised...
