[RC] What to eat during a ride? - Aaron Turnage

I've been dealing with this for a while too.  One thing I have found, watch the fructose content if you tend to get squeemish.  I do okay as long as it's not one of the first few ingredients.  I've found I do better with plain or flavored water (Powerade Option) than any of the Gatorade products.  I drink V8 during the checks, either the veggie or fruit juices.  I tend to prefer the veggie unless it's really hot, so I try to make sure I have both to choose from.  There is enough sodium and potassium in the 20oz bottles to get you through a ride no problem, and the more "natural" content sits really easy on my stomach while sports drinks tend not to.

I can't do solid food very well in the morning so usually have a smoothie drink of some sort.  You can make your own with packaged chocolate instant breakfast, milk, banana and a small spoonful of peanut butter.  Blend at home then just shake and drink at the ride.  Tastes great and the banana give you some extra fiber and potassium while the PB adds protein and good fats.  Change up the flavors every now and then (strawberry w/no PB is pretty good too).  Since I usually have no crew lunch is something fast and quick.  Chicken or tuna salad with crackers, lunchable, fruit, etc.  I've found about the only thing I can eat on the trail is string cheese (lasts about 1-2 hours in your saddle unchilled) or the little fruit cups.  Warning that the juice and/or syrup may foam during all the trotting, found that out when I had some foamy peaches at Tevis.  I just peel back the top and pour them in, they still taste good.  If it's on the shelf at the grocery store it will probably last a little while on trail.  Think about what you used to want in your lunch as a kid....  I've found small and frequent is better than trying to eat (or drink) any singular large quantities.
