RE: [RC] [RC] Re:100 miles barefoot - Terry Banister

I would think the rubber would absorb some concussion. If the horse has more problem than normal with pulling the boots off, then you would just carry spares, and be dismounted more often than other riders. And there is only one good way to fine out . . . :-)

I see a lot of discussion of boots here...My horse is usually barefoot, but sometimes I put shoes on him for a little extra protection in really rocky areas. He is conformationally a nightmare, but one of his worst faults is he paddles in in the rear, sometimes whacking the inside of his other foot pretty hard. He keeps his feet low enough that it is the hoof that takes the hit, not his coronet or above, so he has never injured himself. He has also never forged or pulled shoes (since I've known him anyway), so the whacking is just hoof hitting hoof.

Are boots an option with a horse like this? I'd love to be able to just put them on rather than wating for a farrier to put on shoes or take them off. Keep in mind we do CTRs also, so nothing above the coronary band is allowed.

Thanks,
Christa

I have done 50s barefoot and also with boots on the hind and bare front feet, but never with boots on the front only. I don't want my horse to travel heavy on the front end, and the hind feet need more traction.
I have done two 100s with boots all around. I think that is the best idea, because if anything happened, such as stepping on a nail or whacking an unseen object, or the horse becomes lame for any other reason, you might be upset if it was preventable.
