RE: [RC] [RC] 100 miles barefoot - Terry Banister

I have done 50s barefoot and also with boots on the hind and bare front feet, but never with boots on the front only. I don't want my horse to travel heavy on the front end, and the hind feet need more traction.
I have done two 100s with boots all around. I think that is the best idea, because if anything happened, such as stepping on a nail or whacking an unseen object, or the horse becomes lame for any other reason, you might be upset if it was preventable.

Chrystal,

Talk to Dayolyn Butler in Texas. I know for a fact she and her daughter rode their two horses barefoot to a completions (and one top ten finish) in the NAEC pre-ride in 2004 in Maryland. Sand footing, it is not! I don't believe she booted at all (although I think she wishes she had for the last loop on gravel roads...)

She's a big barefoot proponent, and I am sure could give you lots of good advice on riding 100's barefoot.

Hi :-) so for those who have done a lot of riding in epics/ez boots etc...... who has done 100 miles with the hind feet bare??? I did 2 years of Novice CTR's and mileage rides barefoot ( well actually my horse did :-)) ;last summer started 50's and I used ez boots on the front and nothing on the back- we did a 50 barefoot as the trail was all sand, no gravel or roads. I think she could actually do 50 barefoot with roads/gravel etc.. as we do all of our training that way but we would have to slow down!!! :-( :-( ;-)
Anyway I am planning on doing our first 100 next October- I think it is called Spook Run, in Indiana?? Anyone know the trail?? I am expecting to need to use hind boots for 100 miles so figured I should start using them a few months in advance to get used to them, however then thought I would throw the question out there and see how many people have done 100 with bare back feet.

Thanks for any input!!!!:-)
Chrystal
