You clearly never crewed it. Why do you think the term "Biltmore Virus" was coined in the eary days of the ride. I suspect a lot of reasons account for this. It is in early May and many horses there come from cold climates and probably aren't sufficiently legged up by then. The Carolina red clay can make it a very tough course if it rains - which can be often. And finally it has during this time period been an FEI ride. It has been a selection or demonstration ride for something or another so it has been an "important ride" for a large number of people.
