Re: [RC] [RC] Equipedic Pad Users - Barbara McCrary

The reason it was stiff on a cold morning is not due to the cover but the nature of the foam insert. It is much like the Tempur-Pedic mattress...it is heat-responsive foam, therefore stiff when cold, soft when warmed to the body.

Hi Karla:
I use the equipedic pad, too. Keeping it clean on a regular basis is the best way. I'm not the best at it either - but my friend Mel & Jonathan keep theirs very clean on a regular basis and their pads always remain nice and soft and comfy. As for MY pads, when they're in between cleaning periods, I notice that they harden up specially in cold temperatures. At the VC 100, my pad got a bit hard because I didn't wash it before the endurance ride - and it was a bit past due to be honest with you. So my friend Mel had me put my pad in front of a heating vent, and wouldn't you know it, it became soft and comfortable. And it stayed that way since the heat coming off my horse's body kept it nice and supple. Only after the ride after I unsaddled my mare, as temps went cold again, the pad stiffened up again. So in my experience to answer your question, if you don't have time to clean it before a ride, a quick fix is to place it where it's warm - preferrably a heating vent - even that on your dash-board in your truck.

Good luck. I love those pads - they have been the missing link for me.

I have two Equipedic pads and I wash the pad before it gets hard, which means fairly frequently. I watch to see how it is building up sweat and dirt and wash it before it becomes impossible.

Equipedic Pad users: What can you do when the wool on the pad gets HARD? Is there anything you can soak it in to loosen it up? It is beyond a curry comb. I have had them harden up on 3 pads. My boy is very sensitive and I want to continue to use them but if all the wool parts get stiff and hard, I will have to switch to another pad. Help!!
