The pathogen is not E. coli H057 but rather E. coli O157:H7 There is an excellent information page on the variant at: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~mow/chap15.html The School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin-Madison has a relatively straightforward paper reporting the relationship between animals and E. coli O157:H7 http://www.vetmed.wisc.edu/pbs/zoonoses/O157DT104/O157DT104index.html It would appear that ruminants are the primary carriers of E. coli O157:H7 but deer, horses, dogs, birds and flies may also be sources, not to mention humans :( The family of E. coli bacteria as Robert wrote is omnipresent. We all have E. coli in our systems and would be in serious trouble without it.
