Subject: FW: E coli in horse manure?

Dr. Cliver,

I believe you are the professor quoted in Sunday's New York Times on the
contamination of greens with E. Coli via animal waste. Could you tell me if
horse manure is likely to be a dangerous carrier of E. coli?

I ask because of two reasons -- first, we have a small herd on our property,
and second, I often ride among farms and wonder if I should be concerned
about contaminating the fields.

Regards,

Mike Sherrell

Mr. Sherrell:

Other than in the figurative sense, my experience with horse manure is
limited. However, my impression is that the
reservoir of this kind of E. coli is ruminants, which does not include
horses. I hope!

With best wishes, Dean Cliver
