Normally, you don't need to "steer" on a trail...or at least I haven't found
the need to do that. It's a little hard to use aids when you're hanging on
to his tail up a steep hill. You just want him to walk in a straight line.
Tailing is basically a form of "driving", but you typically only have one
rein. I taught Sunny go left or right by "neck reining" on his butt and
pulling his tail to the side to "sidepass" him in the direction I wanted to
go, but it was of so little value, didn't bother on any of the other horses.

Question: my picture of tailing has the horse's tail being grasped in the
right hand and the lead rope in the left hand. Assuming this is correct,
what are the instructions used to tell the horse to go left and right?
