RE: [RC] [RC] OT Horse Slaughter- mixing issues - Juli Jakub

I have to admit I am divided on this issue. I dislike talk of horses being used for meat to benefit the human race...why do we always have to benefit at the expense of the other living things and the environment?...but I do not like the idea of unwanted horses wasting away somewhere. I have no solution and I did not urge my senators any way as I had no idea which way to urge them. There is a surplus of humanity and we do not send them to slaughter....we ( sometimes) save each other and our population grows steadily until there will be no more room for other species...especially ones that need the space that horses need. But I admit that their is a need to find a solution to the problem. I admit I do not eat cow, goat, pig, and I have a hard time eating chicken and fish... because the act of chewing and digesting flesh makes me have an upset stomach and everyone knows it is no fun to have dinner and then spend an hour visiting the bathroom!! Morally, I would eat home raised meat...I try not to eat slaughterhouse meat...I have toured many slaughterhouses for different species...cows, chickens, pigs...humane is not a word that I would put in the same sentence. I buy free range chicken from a local supplier and someday I hope to raise my own and do the deed myself. I would never eat horse...I have no problem with others eating them neccesarily...but I dislike the attitude that everything was put here on earth to serve us. Horses ( and cows and chickens, and everything else) deserve to exist because they are living beings...but they also deserve to live in acceptable conditions which does not happen for the surplus....it gives me a headache!! Either way to me the horses lose out, suffer slowly in some pen or backyard or be transported brutally and killed brutally. Seems like a decision about the lesser of two evils. I agree though that it seems like the best option is to work to not create such a surplus. Of course that is its own effort in futility!! I would love a perfect solution, but it is not a perfect world...I'll sit on my fence on this issue a while longer...

It's not an easy issue. I think making changes at the slaughter end creates
more problems than it solves. It seems more logical to make the changes at
the front end and figure out how to create less surplus.
