[RC] my mother-in-law and oleander - Jennifer Adam

My mother-in-law tried to give me an oleander houseplant. I freaked out and made my husband burn it - at the time I had two kids under the age of 3. She was offended - until I showed her the plant book that lists it as extremely toxic and hazardous to small children and pets. Now we can joke about giving poisonous houseplants...but at the time it was not funny!

To relate this back to endurance -
I always thought that only bored or hungry horses would munch on poisonous plants. I never thought about an endurance horse snatching a bad bite along the trail. I've been encouraging my horses to snatch quick bites as we ride, but now I worry. I don't know enough to identify toxic plants...how big of a problem is this usually??? Do you just look out for the really bad ones?
