Re: [RC] BUCKY TENN WALKER - Richard M Levine

Lori:

I woud do several things with a horse that behaved this way once you put that little pressure on him.

1. Since he is a new horse for you, I would have his mouth checked out by your vet. Look for any sore spots and make sure he is not in need of a float. If so have it done at this time. If you are noticing any undigested grain in his poop, it is a good indication he is not grinding his grain properly and needs dental care.

2. Check that bit you are using, make sure it is wide enough, and nothing there is pinching him when you pull up on it. Check the curb if you are using one and make sure it is not pinching him from that as well. You may have more port then you need, one way to see if it is the bit, is to say try a simple snaffle and see if the problem goes away?? Process of elimination.

3. You say the saddle is not an issue, but you may want to have an expert see if it fits properly.
Also check your girth to see if it is rubbing him in any place. What about the pad, is is sufficient to relieve pressure?

4. Lastly while at your vet, have them check to see if he needs any chiropratic work. When a horse is out of allignment, they can display this type of behavior, that will dissapear once the adjustment is defined and completed.

Dont rule out that this is learned behavior that was ingrained with the prior owner for whatever reason and must be trained out of the horse over time, once he learns to trust the rider.

Hope some of this is of help to you.

Richard
