[RC] Small Breeders - Rebecca HackworthI guess you could classify me as a VERY small breeder. I took the mare that I had (one) and bred her to the Stallion that would offer improvements on what I had. My 3 colts by her are, you guessed it, about 3/4 CMK. And I honestly know next to nothing about bloodlines, but I know what I like and what to look for in confirmation and movement. Even 40 years ago I did a pretty good job of it. I had a little Mustang mare. Even over 40 miles she didn't break a sweat except under her saddle. I crossed her to 2 different Arab stallions. Got two nice little 1/2 Arabs. Better than Mom. Both better than Mom, but different, reflecting the sire. I sold them to get married (biggest mistake of my life) but did get to see them a few years later. The 1st was doing something that sounds like early CTR or NATRC and "they couldn't go far enough to get him tired". So yes, you can do it without ever seeing a pedigree. What I find facinating is that within the Arabs, it does come back to the same handfull of individuals. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
