From the book The Arabian Horse in America, by
George H. Conn, 1957 "In 1554, Mr. L.L. Dorsey, of Kentucky, bred a daughter of
the imported Arabian Zilcaadie to a little inbred Morgan horse called Vermont
Morgan. The get and produce was called Golddust, from his golden
color. This colt, foaled in 1855 was bred upon the principle of once out
and thrice back to a primitive blood, for Justin Morgan was
Arabian-bred." This book shows a "tabulated pedigree of
JUSTIN MORGAN showing him to be an in-bred Arabian. (Taken from Battel's Morgan
Horse Registry.)" The pedigree is in teeny, tiny print, but I
can make out Oglethorpe Arabian, Leedes Arabian, Darley Arabian, Godolphin
Arabian, Byerly Turk, Bloody Buttocks (Arabian) and some of these several times,
as well as many more Arabians. There are a few "unknowns" in the pedigree,
as well, but almost all are Arabian or "Thoroughbreds" which came from, or were,
in part, Arabian. I, too, for many years fell for the "Justin morgan's
horse, Figure, is of unknown breeding" line; I think Justin Morgan was a
good marketer of an unusually good horse and kept his
bloodlines secret. renie
I understand your concern John, there's
just such a wealth of knowledge on this board that can be shared. I
wouldn't mind a little info on Morgan bloodlines too, if you're willing to
educate us!
