Re: [RC] call it Endurance? - rides2far

Aside from my riding, I am also a caver. A what? Yep, a caver.

Hey Nikki,

You need to come down here to the Chattanooga area sometime. Pigeon Mtn.
where we had (and hope to have) the Longstreet's Charge ride also has the
deepest freefall in a cave in North America. Cavers come from everywhere
to rapel down in there. There's a few places on our trail where we get
sink holes and I often wonder at what point I might be over that free
fall. Maybe you could figure it out for us. :-)

My daughters have both been commercial cave guides. One just does the
little touristy walking tour, the other did the overnight "wild cave"
tours which would be mild for you, but is enough to worry me. You'll
never worry about washing horse blankets in your washer once you've had a
caver in the family. Mud, lots and lots of mud. :-(

Angie

In
the
outside world, you tell people you are a caver and they look puzzled
until
you offer up the word 'spelunker'. In the caving world, we say that
cavers
rescue spelunkers and it is considered insulting to call someone a
spelunker. The outside perception of a title is often different
from how
those inside the sport perceive it. The other parallel that struck
me as
interesting was that the caving community at large spends a lot of
time
trying to figure out how to bring new blood into the sport to map,
restore,
and explore caves. Odd that we all have the same problems.

Oh, and if I am way behind on this, it is because you all filled up
my inbox
while I spent last week as part of a volunteer staff of 25 people
running a
week long convention for 774 cavers. Talk about enduring...

Nikki (and Cody, who hopes to be an endurance horse someday,
maybe...)
