I did it once and it took a LOT of hair out of my horses mane when he put his head down to drink and eat. you have to braid loosely but not .. if this makes sense. ?

When I have watched the Draft horse folks do this sort of braid, they often sit on the horses back to do so. But, on the distance horses, I would imagine it would be a braid that might want to pull out when they drop their heads to eat and drink.
