I agree with this.  We had a running QH once who could not be beat for 30-35 miles.  But after that, forget it.

Diane, your post was very well stated.  Let me add that one of the arguments that swayed me was that endurance was defined on the physiologic response of the horse AFTER 25-30 miles.  At this point is where ENDURANCE horses are created.
