Very groovy experiment!

Metal is an excellent temperature conductor so what you found stands to
reason, but it also conducts heat away very quickly too so a movement onto a
cooler surface will cool the shoe down quickly.

When a shod horse is standing on hot pavement, the shoes very 
quickly become almost as hot as the pavement, about a degree 
less. The nails conduct heat too, and the clinches are about 
a degree lower in temperature than the shoe.
