RE: [RC] [RC] tying up - Ranelle Rubin

IMHO it was a combinatoin of both. Except in NV where water is too scarce, most alfalfa is grown with gravity-flow irrigation. This method washes out alot of valuable minerals from the soil, causing the crop grown to be defficient. The most common mineral washed out is Selenium. If you have heard of the Kesterson Resevoir disaster in CA, you know what I am talking about.

We are so at the mercy of whatever good quality hay we can find.

I had a heavy stock type mare I was riding CTR that was tying up during
conditioning. I finally correlated the episodes to her being given alfalfa. I
tried to put her on alfalfa 3 different times and 3 times she tied up shortly
after riding out. So I cut it out completely. I also started her on a Vit E
Selenium supplement ( after carefully reading all the warnings ). I did 1250 CTR
miles and countless conditioning and pleasure miles and she never tied up
again.
I am convinced it was the alfalfa, but I dont think the Vit E Sel hurt at
all either.
