[RC] OT: undiagnosed horse illness ??'s - Deanna German

The horse was euthanized, so no diagnosis was made. Anyone here see anything like this?

Elderly horse (well, he was 20, but looked and acted very elderly) blind or nearly so, had been slowing down for a year. I saw him his last 6 months and there was a definite deterioration in general condition. There was a lot of concern about him for the last month or so.

He was observed last week standing oddly in the pasture. Kind of like front feet going one way and hinds going the opposite, bent in the middle. A very uncomfortable looking stance. Friday, he went from the uncomfortable looking stance to staggering in circles in a matter of hours. The horse could not walk straight, couldn't be led. His front end seemed OK, but his hind end wasn't. He was clearly in distress. Gut sounds were near zero, but pulse and temperature weren't elevated. Respiration was short and rapid. Anal tone flaccid.

I'd never seen anything like it. The vets here wouldn't even speculate on what it was. Since I'm an information sponge, I'd like to know if anyone out in RC land would like to speculate on what it could have been.

TIA.

Deanna
