Ah, but Truman, realize why it was considered protocol for
the female to precede the man through the doorway! If there
was a brigand on the nether side of the portal, the woman
would take the brunt of the assault (women were expendable,
plenty more available) and our brave, courteous gentleman
would then dispense the said brigand, and he could go on to
other more beautiful Endeavour's. 

It was called survival of the male of the species, in order
to procreate and to extend civilization.
