Re: [RC] [RC] Run-in Sheds - Diane Trefethen

Gee, Ange... didn't you know I was referring to the subjective interpretation of shivering in equine vs humanoid species? Just as when one person in a room at 70F will shiver and say it's chilly while the person standing next to him in a sleeveless shirt will say it's really comfortable, horses are COMFORTABLE at much lower temperatures than are people. Their bodies register the fact that it is colder and shiver to help maintain the correct temperature, but the horses themselves don't feel miserable from the cold. However, when we humans start to shiver, we are uncomfortable and the temp may be as high as 65F. At 30F we FEEL terribly cold and miserable. The horse does not.
So...if my body shivers because *it* is trying to increase my internal
heat, I can just ignore it because I'm not *really* cold? That's such a
relief to know! I can hardly wait till winter. :-P

Angie
