RE: [RC] USEF to Replace US Chef de' Equipe - stephteeter

Within 28 hours of the announcment, I have seen 12 nominees (both east and
west coast represented) express their support for Tom, and ask that he
remain as chef d'equip, and I have seen one horse and rider withdraw. The
new staff will still be involved in selecting the ultimate 5 to represent
the US in Aachen, and the hopeful riders are most likely not going to start
making political waves at this point.

The job of Chef is a very big deal in my opinion. This is the person that
along with the team vets, will instruct the riders on strategy and pacing on
race day. It is critical that there is mutual trust, and also that the Chef
is in tune with the riders, and capable of assessing the horses' abilities
from the onset of the competition. We've had WEC's where the Chef left most
of the decisions up to the individual riders, and we've had WEC's where the
Chef and staff exerted total control over the riders. This is the first time
we've had a Chef who truly understands the athletic nature of endurance
races, who has trained and competed as a human athlete, as well as with
equine athletes. There is nothing quite like 'been there, done that' to
give one wisdom and the ability to read situations correctly.

John & Steph -

Wouldn't it be prudent to check with the selectees to the team and see what
THEIR reaction is to this before we here on Ridecamp start sending letters
and/or twisting arms?

If the case is that "old school" doesn't like the techniques Tom considered
useful in fielding a successful Endurance team because they conflict with
established protocol in the older disciplines, I would agree to let the old
farts have it with both barrels. But what if there is a completely
different issue responsible for his imminent dismissal? Egg on face is a
b*tch to remove. <kind>
