Re: [RC] Sunday - Maryanne Gabbani

I'll have to do some checking on the days of the week in ancient Egyptian with some of my Egyptologist friends, but I'm sure that the words involved had nothing at all to do in sound with ours. Interestingly enough the current Egyptian week starts on a Sunday and continues to Saturday. The days of the week are simply numbered with Sunday being Day One, Monday Day Two, and so on until Friday which is called Goma here, meaning the day of gathering for prayer. Then they go back to numbers for Saturday. If you want to drive through downtown Cairo in a hurry, Friday any time before noon prayer (or during noon prayer) is the time for it because the streets are fairly empty. Afternoon, everyone and his brother is out and about. Many shops close on Sundays for some odd reason as well. Very random.

better watch it Bruce or someone some where will start a Quackenbush Jihad

Heck with my work schedule these days it really pays to be one of the
unwashed pagans, any day I'm not in the office is a perfectly fine day to
hit the trail. Plus I would rather be out in the woods listening to my
horse than in some building listening to someone ramble on and on and on....

Besides any time I need direction and purpose in my life the boss [my wife]
always tells me directly....

Actually, Sunday was given it's name by the Egyptians long before
Christians declared it a Sabbath. The Egyptians could see seven
"planets" in the sky--the Sun, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury,
and the moon. They named the days of the week after these "planets"--
Saturday for Saturn, Monday for the moon, Wednesday for Venus, Sunday
for the Sun, etc.,. Different religions declare different days of the
week as their Sabbath. I guess that way, whatever day you choose to be
out riding your horse, you can be sure to be offending somebody. Dr Q
